The Credit for Caring Act - financial help for caregivers

Screenshot-2021-10-12-at-11-18-19-Text---S-1670---117th-Congress-2021-2022-Credit-for-Caring-Act-of-2021

A bill making its way through both houses of Congress would give some of America’s 48 million family caregivers of adults much-needed financial assistance.  The Credit for Caring Act, introduced in mid-May in the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives, would provide a federal tax credit of up to $5,000 for working family caregivers. That could help defray the thousands of dollars that many families spend each year in out-of- pocket costs.

AARP has been following the legislation and has been a strong advocate for it. "Family caregivers are the backbone of the long-term care system", says Nancy LeaMond, AARP executive vice president and chief advocacy and engagement officer. AARP has been lobbying for the tax credit, to make life easier for unpaid family caregivers.

Earn $15 an hour wage at eHark

minimumwageprotestors

The fight to raise the Federal Minimum wage to $15/hour received a considerable amount of coverage.  While the bill to do so failed in the Senate, it prompted a lot of discussion and enthusiasm among low-wage workers in the food service industry where the tipped wage has stayed at $2.13 for years.

The good news is that to earn $15/hour won't need a presidential decree - Service Providers at eHark are already earning $15 an hour - and they are paid to do so while working in a community of friendly and caring entrepreneurs who deliver non-medical services to seniors.

EHarkReinvented

Ehark experienced a successful start up in 2019 providing Companion Services for Seniors. Going into 2020, we were excited about the opportunities continuing to fulfill the mission providing quality caring, non-medical services to seniors. That excitement exists even stronger today because of what we learned and the effects of COVID-19. As you know, COVID-19 has had far-reaching negative consequences, especially on the elderly, as well as businesses of all sizes and types. Deaths, bankruptcies, business closures, psychological and physiological disorders, and economic instability continue with no end in sight. As a result, many businesses have decided to reinvent themselves not only out of necessity but also out of a changing world. Ehark is no exception.

The gift of cooking

pablo-lancaster-jones-711732-unsplash
Loneliness - and the depression that often accompanyies it - are among the leading causes that can lead to older adults losing their appetite. According to to the Doctor's Health Press, sometimes just the prospect of eating alone is enough to decrease eating in the elderly.  When a senior begins to develop a habit of not cooking because they are going to eat alone, it can begin a spiral leading to weight loss, malnutrition and frailness. Malnutrition has become a growing concern as so much of the United States population ages. Inadequate nutrition intake can result in a number of illnesses that negatively impact the aging community. Weight loss, fatigue, loss of strength, and muscle weakness can develop and lead to falls and broken bones. Malnutrition also impacts memory, depression, and anxiety. One of the services eHark provides is assistance with meal preparation. These services do more for the senior than...

Visit a senior for Easter

MamaUnderstoodSlider03

Many Christians and non-Christians are anticipating the coming of Easter week to celebrate the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. I can’t help but to reflect on my growing up and what Easter Sunday meant to our family; new church clothes, attending church, Easter egg hunt, Easter dinner and great fellowship. As I think about that rich family tradition, I am equally saddened as I think about my grandmother’s aging process. Therefore, I decided to demonstrate my reflection on Easter by borrowing excerpts from my book, Ma, Ma, Um Sweatin.

A Safe Home

FallingHeaderImage

As we age slips, trips, falls, over-reach and diminished sensory judgement become liabilities. If you're in a category at risk, or you have a loved one or family member who is, you may want to consider some of the practical measures that can be taken to reduce that risk.  eHark shares this kind of information with it's personal care aides when they are helping seniors.  Many of these steps make seniors daily activities easier and reduce the risk of exposure to unsafe conditions.

eHark now offering senior transportation services

349bf1fd391ad1bb80d0cae22816df9d

Many seniors are unable to drive due to medication or because their eyesight starts going to a point where they are unable to renew their licenses.  Some estimates are as high as one in five seniors being unable to drive themselves.  Many of these seniors are cut off by not being able to drive and end up being forced to stay at home because of a lack of transportation. This in turn can have knock-on effects, like missing medical appointments, being unable to shop for groceries, or missing social events.

The backstory to eHark Angels

image1

During my sophomore year in college I pledged a service fraternity named Royal Knights Society. The main mission of the fraternity was to provide community service along with service to the university to benefit people. One annual project carried out by the RKS that was a favorite of mine was to visit a local nursing home over the Christmas Holiday season.
