A bill making its way through both houses of Congress would give some of America’s 48 million family caregivers of adults much-needed financial assistance.  The Credit for Caring Act, introduced in mid-May in the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives, would provide a federal tax credit of up to $5,000 for working family caregivers. That could help defray the thousands of dollars that many families spend each year in out-of- pocket costs.

AARP has been following the legislation and has been a strong advocate for it. "Family caregivers are the backbone of the long-term care system", says Nancy LeaMond, AARP executive vice president and chief advocacy and engagement officer. AARP has been lobbying for the tax credit, to make life easier for unpaid family caregivers.

The measure would give eligible family caregivers a 30% tax credit for qualified expenses above $2,000. The credit could help offset the cost of services like home care aides, adult day care, and respite care, as well as home modifications like ramps and smart technology that make caregiving at home safer and easier.  The bill has bipartisan support in both houses of Congress. If passed, an analysis has found that supporting caregivers age 50-plus in the workplace could grow the U.S. gross domestic product by $1.7 trillion between now and 2030.
